From choosing the right image to printing, pressing, checking, and packaging, every step helps turn a special photo into a glossy magnet that can be displayed and enjoyed every day.

Whether the magnet features a family picture, wedding photo, baby memory, pet portrait, graduation moment, or holiday snapshot, the goal is always the same: to create a small, meaningful item that looks clear, polished, and ready to be gifted or used by yourself.

Step 1: Choosing the Right Photo

The process begins with the photo. A good photo magnet starts with a clear, bright, high-quality image. Since fridge magnets are small, the photo needs to be easy to see at a glance.

Close-up photos usually work best because faces, pets, and important details remain visible after the image is resized. Family portraits, baby pictures, graduation photos, wedding images, pet photos, vacation memories, and holiday pictures are all great choices.

Photos that are too dark, blurry, crowded, or taken from far away may not print as clearly on a small magnet. A simple photo with good lighting often gives the best result.

Step 2: Preparing and Cropping the Image

Step 3: Printing the Photo

Glossy and semi-gloss photo papers are popular choices because they enhance color vibrancy and image clarity. The paper should also be thick enough (not too thick) to handle cutting and pressing without tearing or wrinkling during production.

A good print should have clear details, balanced color, and enough brightness. If the printed photo looks dull, fuzzy, or too dark, the finished magnet will also look less polished.

The size must also be accurate. If the image is printed too small or too large, it may not line up correctly during production. Consistent sizing helps ensure the photo fits properly inside the magnet shell and remains centered after assembly.

There are ready-made printing templates available on the market for many popular button press and magnet-making machines. These templates help position and size photos correctly before printing. Alternatively, you can create your own custom template based on the specific magnet size and press machine you use. Using the correct template helps ensure accurate cutting, proper alignment, and a professional-looking finished magnet.

Before moving to the next stage, the printed image should be checked for color accuracy, sharpness, and overall quality to ensure the finished magnet looks its best.

Step 4: Cutting the Photo to Size

After printing, the photo is cut to the exact size and shape required for the magnet. This is usually done using a specialized photo cutter or punch cutter designed for button-style magnets.

The cutter creates clean, consistent edges and ensures that every photo fits perfectly inside the metal shell during assembly. Accurate cutting is important because even a small misalignment can affect the appearance of the finished magnet.

This step also helps keep important parts of the image centered so faces, names, and other key details remain visible in the final product.

Step 5: Loading the Metal Shell into the Press

The assembly process begins by placing the tinplate metal shell into the first station of the button press machine. This metal shell forms the foundation of the photo magnet and provides the structure that gives the finished piece its durable shape.

The shell must be positioned correctly inside the press to ensure all layers align properly during assembly. Accurate placement helps create smooth edges and a professional finish.

Step 6: Positioning the Photo and Mylar Cover

Once the metal shell is in place, the printed photo is carefully centered on top of the shell. A clear Mylar cover is then placed over the photo.

The Mylar layer serves several important purposes. It creates the glossy finish that gives the magnet its polished appearance while also helping protect the image from fingerprints, dust, moisture, and everyday handling.

Proper alignment is important at this stage because the photo, Mylar cover, and metal shell will soon be permanently pressed together.

Step 7: Pressing the Front of the Magnet

The press machine is then used to combine the metal shell, photo print, and Mylar cover into a single front piece.

During pressing, the edges of the photo and Mylar are wrapped neatly around the metal shell. This creates the smooth, rounded button-style appearance that photo magnets are known for.

At this point, the front portion of the magnet is complete and consists of three layers: a clear glossy Mylar cover, a printed photo, and a tinplate metal shell

Step 8: Adding the Magnet Backing and Completing Assembly

Next, the assembled front piece stays at the first station, and a backing piece is added to the other side. Depending on the magnet style, this backing may be made of molded plastic or another rigid support material designed to fit securely with the metal shell.

The press is used a second time to lock the front assembly and backing together, creating a complete magnet body.

After assembly, a custom-cut magnetic sheet is applied to the back. This magnet layer is precisely cut to match the shape of the finished magnet and provides the holding power needed to attach securely to refrigerators, lockers, filing cabinets, magnetic boards, and other suitable metal surfaces.

Step 9: Checking the Finished Magnet

Before the magnet is packaged, it should be checked carefully. Quality checking helps make sure the finished product looks clean, smooth, and ready to use.

Important things to check include photo clarity, correct cropping, centered image placement, a smooth, glossy surface, neat edges, a secure magnet backing, no major bubbles, wrinkles, scratches, or peeling, and a good magnetic hold.

This step helps ensure that each magnet looks polished and works properly.

Step 10: Testing the Magnet

The finished magnet should also be tested on a magnetic surface. This confirms that the backing is strong enough and that the magnet stays in place.

Testing is especially important for larger photo magnets because the magnet backing must support the finished piece's size and weight.

Photo fridge magnets work on clean, flat magnetic surfaces. 

Step 11: Packaging the Magnet

The final step is packaging. Packaging protects the glossy surface from scratches and makes the magnet ready for gifting, shipping, or display.

Photo magnets may be placed in clear sleeves, small bags, envelopes, backing cards, gift boxes, or themed sets. Good packaging helps the magnet arrive safely and also makes it feel more special.

For gift magnets, presentation matters. A simple backing card, thank-you note, or clean protective sleeve can make a small magnet feel thoughtful and finished.
